One of the things that really bothers me is people breaking the Third Commandment, “Do not use the Lord’s Name in vain.” Often when that happens, I might turn my head and say their name repeatedly, without acknowledging their presence. I just want to drive the point home.
It boggles my mind that a lot of Christian leaders flippantly use God’s name in vain. (I tread carefully because I feel we’re prone to judge others for things we can easily control, i.e. someone who doesn’t drink at all or have pre-martial sex or struggle with those things can easily point the finger at those that do.) But it seems that this is something that could easily be controlled.
There’s a difference between cussing (or cursing, if you prefer) and using God’s Name in vain. Cussing is using foul language, explicit words. Using God’s Name in vain is different. Something that is done “in vain” has no worth or value; it is empty. God’s Name is so precious and powerful that whenever it is evoked, we should be cognizant of that fact. Using His Name for His unattended purpose, saying O My God outside of prayer/praise, is using His Name is vain.
I feel that we should be aware of what we’re saying and thinking whenever we use the Name of God. There’s power and meaning there. Let’s use it properly.

I didn’t understand the concluding part of your article, could you please explain it more?
i believe there is power in the name of God and that we should be aware of that. we should also be respectful of that and not take it for granted.
